Day Trip Adventure

June 3rd, 2017

Guests often ask our concierge department for day trip ideas during their stays at Hotel Walloon. Northern Michigan is so rich with history, beauty and adventure, sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start!

Here are a few ideas to get you started on your next big (or small) day trip adventure in beautiful Northern Michigan.

Start your day enjoying a light breakfast in the Hearth Room of the Hotel to fuel up for your day of adventuring. After you’ve had your fill of coffee, pastries and fresh fruit, head north on M-75 to the junction and then turn left to drive north on US-131.

In about 7 miles you will find yourself heading downhill overlooking the breathtaking Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan on the shores of Petoskey. Continue strait onto US-31. This historic city was once called the “Land of the Million Dollar Sunset” and its downtown area is home to many unique gift shops, eateries, museums and art galleries. Some Petoskey Favorites include Chandler’s Restaurant, Symons General Store, Grandpa Shorter’s, American Spoon Food and Harbor Wear.  This is a wonderful area to spend the rest of your adventure but if not, we have more in store.

Continue North on US 31. Soon you’ll find yourself on the shores of Bay View, a historic community that flourishes in the summer months and is completely closed down during the winter months. Most of these Victorian-style houses were built well over 100 years ago! Feel free to turn up and drive through Bay View, but beware of its winding streets… they can get you turned around in a hurry! Once you are through Bay View, be prepared to turn North on M-119.

Once you’ve made the left turn to go north on M-119 keep an eye out for the Historic Petoskey Brewing Building on the right side of the road. (Stop here for a refreshment if you are craving a delicious craft brew.) Before the Prohibition this building served as the original Petoskey Brewing Company. Its odd shape and height allowed for it to serve as a gravity fed brewery. The Brewing process is a little more modernized now, but the community is happy to see the old brewery building back in use.

Keep heading north on M-119. In about 5 miles you will find yourself in beautiful Harbor Springs. You are now on the North side of Little Traverse Bay, overlooking Harbor Cove. This quaint town has a lovely marina, many delicious restaurants and unique shops to peruse. Some Harbor Springs favorites include The Pier Restaurant, Mustang Wendy’s, The Lyric Theater and Yummies ice cream. Finish off your day here in Harbor Springs or keep reading for the next and final leg of your adventure.

Keep heading North on M-119 for about 5 more miles. Keep your eyes peeled for Pond Hill Farm on the right side of the road. Pond Hill farm is a unique hidden gem with miles of trails to hike and explore, a delicious café and winery/brewery where you can enjoy a tasting. Green houses and livestock barns where you can feed the goats, pigs, sheep and geese. As well as a giant slingshot called the “squash rocket” to use to feed the goats and sheep in the adjacent fields. Hours of family fun are to be had at Pond Hill Farm!

And now your adventure is complete for today. I hope you found a little inspiration for your next day trip while staying at Hotel Walloon. Our concierge department would be happy to print out maps or give you more advice! Have fun!
