There are only 4 weeks left until the start of fall! Last Monday, we shared Northern Michigan Fall Color Tours Part I and highlighted M119 and the Tunnel of Trees.

Pick your favorite fall color tour that is shared during this five-week color tour series, book a stay at Hotel Walloon and come for a long weekend to enjoy the natural beauty of northern Michigan! At the end of a long day of sightseeing, head back to Hotel Walloon for the perfect night of relaxation in front of our massive stone fireplace, sip some wine and indulge with hors d’ouevres provided by the Walloon Lake Inn.

This week, read about the Tri County Tour, a favorite in the Petoskey area.

Tri County Tour

The Tri-County Tour is the perfect way to spend a Michigan autumn day. This tour begins in Downtown Petoskey, located only 15 minutes away from Hotel Walloon.

Petoskey Area Visitor’s Bureau shared these directions for this tour:

  • Head east out of Petoskey on Mitchell Street (C-58).
  • Pass Wildwood Road and continue to Wolverine.
  • Take a right at the stop light onto Straits Highway.
  • Continue for seven miles to Thumb Lake Road (C-48).
  • Turn Right onto Thumb Lake Road.
  • In ¼ mile turn left toward Boyne City. Continue for 14 miles to US 131.
  • Turn left onto US 131 S.
  • Continue on M-75 North and you will end up back Hotel Walloon!

A northern Michigan fall color tour isn’t complete without multiple stops to enjoy the northern atmosphere, taste some delicious sweet treats and see the leaves changing color first hand along the way! Below are a few suggested stops along the route to make this the perfect fall day in northern Michigan:

Stop 1: Bill’s Farm Market

This first stop is everything you could hope for in a fall farm market! Bill’s Farm Market offers seasonal fall vegetables, pumpkins, delicious maple syrup and local honey. When planning this northern Michigan fall color tour, schedule this trip for a Saturday. On Saturdays, Bill will take you on a hayride! Upon completion of the hayride, there will be apple cider and donuts.

Stop 2: Wildwood Road Hiking

If you are looking for a workout after your donuts, consider turning left onto Wildwood Road and spending an hour or two hiking. The trails are perfect for stretching your legs and seeing the gorgeous fall leaves as they change color. Upon arriving at the Trailhead, there is a posted map for you to choose which trail interests you.

Avalanche Mtn

Stop 3: Boyne City

There are so many great choices of things to do in Boyne City! But for this northern Michigan fall color tour, hike up Avalanche Mountain to see more of the fall scenery and catch a glimpse of the panoramic view of Lake Charlevoix from the top. There are two ways to reach the top of Avalanche Mountain. The easiest way to the top is climbing 462 steps for unbelievable views of Boyne City and beyond. The second way to reach the top of Avalanche Mountain is to hike up the back of the mountain on a trail that is a little less than three miles long. After admiring the stunning views and changing of the leaves, walk down the 462 steps. After this hike, drive the short distance into Downtown Boyne City for a delicious dinner at one of their fantastic eateries.

After dinner in Boyne City, enjoy the fall scenery and ten-minute drive back to Hotel Walloon for a night of relaxing in front of the massive field stone fireplace with drinks from the Hearthroom bar!

While last week’s northern Michigan Fall Color Tour (see here) was full of food at almost every stop, this week’s fall color tour is full of hiking! This fall color tour will allow you to feel the cool breeze and hear the crunch of the leaves under your feet.
